The Refuge Vow
Refuge Ceremony: This is a ceremony in which a student formally receives the protection of the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha and makes a commitment to view the Buddha as the example of fully realized wisdom and compassion that we wish to emulate, the
Dharma (the teachings of the Buddha) as the path to that realization, and the Sangha (our teachers and companions on the path) as our support on the path. The Refuge Vow is generally considered the first formal step on the Buddhist path. Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche and Lama Norlha Rinpoche have always taught that
taking the refuge vow does not preclude the practice of other religions or spiritual traditions; it may be taken
as an enhancement of another path of practice.
